I am running the Sitemap version 4.x, DNN 5.6x
I attempted to upgrade to latest version 5, and receive this error:
A critical error has occurred.
Illegal characters in path.

Could you post full error ?
Or else email to support@
The module is compatible with dnn 5.6.2+
The path error might occur if your web server doesn't allow dots in file path.
This happens on IIS6 with security plugins.

That's all the information that in the error message, nothing more.
Regarding the dots in the file path, I have updated other modules with dots, no problem. Just in case I renamed your package to SiteMap_PA_0500230.zip and received the same error.

There are dots in the install folder file path:
DesktopModules/DNNMasters.SEO.Site-Map
That's the only thing that I can think of because nobody has ever reported such problem.
